It is well hidden in the Hongkou district, close to Shanyin Road and it is said that any couple that walks down it holding hand will have a happy marriage.

Tian’ai Road or “The Sweet Love Road” is generally considered to be one of the most beautiful street in the city, and those who live on that street are proud of its name and don’t hesitate to let the tourists know that they will have a marriage full of luck and happiness if they walk down it. No other China must see tourist objective will ever fill you with so much benevolence and legendary scent.

The name of the street is connected to an old legend that tells the story about a girl of a wealthy family who fell in love with a shepherd. The couple had to face the girl’s family resistance, but their love was stronger and resisted to all impediments, the lovers living happily together until they grew old. The street is named after the girl’s name, Tian’ai (Sweet Love). It was built around 1920, and between 1930-1940 houses started to be built and the actual view took shape back then.

The street is flanked by tall trees and sprinkled with decorative stones on which are inlaid love poems in English and Chinese. There is also a very beautiful alternative for those who travel alone: send a letter or a postcard to your beloved one from the post box found at the end of the street. Every letter mailed from there will have on it a special postage stamp that attests that it was sent from Tian’ai Road, The Sweet Love Road from Shanghai. Contrary to what you may think, the road is quiet and somewhat mysterious. Today, the place called Monterey is now known as the base to a number of higher learning institutions. We are home to the Defense Language Institute, the Naval Postgraduate School as well as the Monterey Institute of International Studies. However, it might surprise you to know that this place is once a loathed, jagged and a sleeping fishing town.
